PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
What to do Before Arriving in Viseu
Application Forms: Registration, Accommodation, Intensive Course of Portuguese.
To apply for a study/training period at the Polytechnic of Viseu, students must contact the International Office. Accommodation requests and registration for the intensive course of Portuguese are also subject to an application.
The deadlines for applications area as follows:
-1st semester students: 1st July;
-2nd semester students: 30th November.
Students who are not citizens of an EU Member State shall request a student visa at the Portuguese diplomatic services in their home country. To do so, it is necessary to have a declaration stating that they have been accepted as international students at the Polytechnic of Viseu. This declaration can be obtained at the International Office of this institution.
How to Get to Viseu
The airports closest to Viseu are:
- Airport Francisco Sá Carneiro (Oporto) (www.ana-aeroportos.pt)

Once in Oporto/Lisbon, students can catch a taxi or a bus to get to the central bus station of the city:

The bus timetables are available at http://www.rede-expressos.pt . As this site does not have information in English, students who do not understand Portuguese shall contact the International Office to obtain information.
As an alternative, the trip to Viseu can be made by train (http://www.cp.pt -see English link):
Please notice that the train stations closest to Viseu are the ones in Mangualde (approx. 20km) and in Nelas (approx. 22 Km). Once in these towns, students must catch a bus to Viseu. These buses leave from the train station.
By Train (International)
If the student chooses to travel by train from his home country, he/she should keep in mind that the railway stations closest to Viseu are in Mangualde (approx. 20km) and Nelas (approx. 22 Km).

By Bus (International)
To travel to Portugal by bus, the student will have to contact, in his/her home country, companies with international connections. Information about some of these companies, in several European countries, is available at (www.busweb.com/busweb.asp).
Procedures upon arrival
Once the international student knows the exact day/hour of arrival in Viseu, the International Office of the Polytechnic should be informed of it. Students arriving during the week, between 9.00h and 17.30h, will be received by an International Office staff member or by a student of the Polytechnic. The person responsible for the reception will lead the incoming students to their accommodation. Upon arrival, the student will be informed of the time and conditions of his/her first contact with the International Office and of the meeting with the Erasmus Academic Coordinator, for the discussion of all the scientific and pedagogic aspects of the study/training period in Viseu.
If the student arrives on a weekend or after the international office working hours (abovementioned timetable), the reception will depend on the services’ availability. However, the student will be informed, in due time, of how to proceed under these circumstances (including information such as the accommodation place and the best way to get there).
International students received in the framework of mobility programmes will be offered the possibility of being accommodated at student hall of the Polytechnic (Campus). As the number of rooms is limited, reservations are made on a "first come, first served" basis. Information on accommodation prices and conditions (set annually) can be obtained through the International Office of the Polytechnic Institute (see accommodation forms – forms section).
Health Insurance and Medical Assistance
When leaving to Portugal, the student must carry one of the following forms: E111 or E128 (these documents enssure medical assistance during a temporary stay in another European Member State).Students who are not citizens of a EU Member State or, for any other reason, are not entitled to the abovementioned documents, should make a private health insurance.
In case of need of medical assistance, the student should present one of the before mentioned health insurances. Free medical assistance is assured for E-111 and E-128 beneficiaries. Previously to their departure, holders of a private health insurance must get acquainted with the procedures to follow in case of need of medical assistance in Portugal.
There are several banks in the city. Additionally, international students can also use the services of a bank agency located at the Central Services building of the Polytechnic Institute, as well as several Cash Point Machines / ATM at the Institution.
