Beira Alta – central region of Portugal – a plateau area, halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Spanish border, surrounded by mountains: Leomil, Montemuro, Lapa, Arada, Estrela and Caramulo. The district of Viseu is crossed by several rivers and their affluents: Mondego, Vouga, Paiva, Mel, Pavia…).

Weather: the maximum temperature of the region is 28.4ºc on average, while the lowest temperature is 2.1ºc, on average.
An average rainfall of 1230mm3 and an average annual temperature of 13ºc complete the portrait of the local weather. Although there are several micro-climates in the region, winters are usually cold and rainy, and summers hot and dry. However, it is quite possible that some warm and sunny days can be enjoyed between February and March.

Living in Lamego

Lamego is a Portuguese city that belongs to the district of Viseu. It is located in the North and is part of the Douro sub-region. Its 18 parishes comprise 24.315 inhabitants which makes it the second largest city in the district. The municipality is located on the south bank of the Douro River and was part of the traditional province of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. According to some researchers, it was once the main city of the region of Beira Transmontana.

Lamego is a historical and monumental city because of its many monuments, churches and emblazoned houses. The city is also a Portuguese diocese.

Location: The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Mesão Frio and Peso da Régua, to the east by Armamar, to the southeast by Tarouca, to the southwest by Castro Daire and to the west by Resende.

The weather: The Douro region, where Lamego is located, is known for its very cold and harsh winters and its hot and dry summers. Average annual temperatures range from 11.8 to 16.5ºC. The amount of rainfall varies throughout the year, but its highest rain values are recorded in December and January (between 50.6 mm and 204.3 mm) and its lowest values occur in July or August (between 6.9 mm and 16.2 mm).
